Across Africa on a Tribike: Schwan Wahab’s Challenge

An epic journey to break down the boundaries of disability

A dream, a mission, a challenge. Schwan Wahab, an athlete of Iraqi origin now residing in Switzerland, has embarked on an extraordinary endeavor: to cross the entire African continent – from Cape Town, South Africa, to Morocco – on a Tribike.

Covering a distance of over 10,000 km, Schwan rides between 50 and 70 km per day on his Tribike, facing rough terrain, extreme heat, and logistical challenges. Yet, every obstacle is just another milestone on his path to the ultimate goal.

This journey, which began in January, will last approximately fourteen months and aims to prove that disability is no barrier to determination and the will to overcome personal limits.

Schwan Wahab: A Life of Resilience, Sport, and Renewal

Schwan Wahab’s past is marked by an event that changed his life forever: an explosion that resulted in the loss of his legs.

After moving to Switzerland, he discovered a new drive in life through sports and competition in 2009. Since then, he has become a wheelchair basketball athlete, representing Switzerland internationally and showcasing his determination and talent.

However, his ambition to dream big will lead him, in January 2024, to embark on his greatest adventure yet: crossing Africa. Riding his Tribike, he embraces each stage as a triumph, navigating rugged terrains and vast landscapes, always driven by the belief that disability should never limit the desire to achieve one’s dreams.

“Every kilometer traveled is a victory over limitations, every encounter a testament to solidarity: this journey is a challenge for the soul and an invitation to overcome all barriers, both physical and mental.”

A Journey Through Wild Lands, Cities, and Extraordinary Cultures

Schwan’s adventure began in Cape Town, with the ultimate goal of reaching Morocco by crossing much of Africa on his Tribike. Key stops along the way include Zimbabwe, Zambia, Angola, and Cameroon.

The journey continues along Africa’s west coast, passing through Benin, Togo, and Senegal before reaching Morocco. Each leg of the trip brings adventures and new challenges, which Schwan shares through his social media channels. Here, he documents intense moments, obstacles, and the breathtaking beauty of Africa’s landscapes and cultures.
